Searching Cases by Name
Indiana MyCase is the only confirmed online Blackford County case-search channel. Open the public MyCase search without creating an account, choose Name, and select Blackford County. A person search needs a last name plus a first name, middle name, or birth date. First or middle name alone will not run. Business searches use the separate Business field. The optional sounds-like control can catch spelling variants, while a trailing wildcard can broaden a name that starts with known letters. Those tools cannot be combined in the same name field.
Begin narrowly. MyCase will not return more than 1,000 results, and broad collection is contrary to the portal's guidance. Use a category, case status, or filing-date range when common names yield too many matches. Birth date helps narrow a search but does not display in public case details.
- Open MyCase, select Name, and choose Blackford County.
- Enter the last name and at least a first name, middle name, or birth date.
- Limit the Blackford County case search by category, status, or filing date.
- Compare court, caption, file date, and case type before opening the case summary.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last | Text | Yes for a person | Pair with first, middle, or birth date. |
| First or Middle | Text | One narrowing field | Initials and trailing wildcards are accepted. |
| Court and Category | Dropdown and checkboxes | No | Select Blackford County, then Criminal & Citation, Civil, Family, or Probate. |
| File Date From/To | Date | No | Uses the initial filing date in mm/dd/yyyy format. |
Blackford County MyCase Search
The Case, Name, and Attorney tabs lead to different searches. Attorney search accepts an attorney number alone or a last name paired with first or middle name. Do not combine the number and name. Advanced Search Options adds Open, Closed, or All status plus filing-date bounds. Category limits appear only after a court is chosen, so selecting Blackford County first prevents a statewide list from obscuring the controls.
The public interface can present CAPTCHA checks. That is a normal limit, not a record status. For compiled data, Indiana provides a separate bulk-data application process. A focused Blackford County case search is the right route for following one's own matter, confirming a public hearing, or studying a known public case.
The Indiana MyCase help page explains public coverage and document limits before the first search.

This source view reinforces why portal results and the Clerk's official file are distinct.
Searching by Case Number
The Case tab accepts one of three identifiers: Case Number, Citation Number, or Cross Reference. Each field permits up to 30 characters. Do not combine identifiers. Hyphens and leading zeroes may be omitted when retrying a case number. A Blackford Superior Court infraction might follow 05D01-YYMM-IF-000123. Here, 05 is Blackford County, D identifies Superior Court, 01 is the court number, YYMM gives filing year and month, IF marks the case type, and the last six digits form the sequence.
Circuit cases begin with 05C01. A transfer between Blackford courts can change that first court identifier while ordinarily keeping the filing sequence. Search the exact current number first, then retry without punctuation. If an old 05H01, 05H02, or 05E01 number fails, ask the Clerk because those former local courts are abolished.
Blackford Case Codes Decoded
Case type codes provide routing clues, not findings. Blackford examples include IF for infraction, OV for ordinance, SC for small claims, F6 for Level 6 felony, CM for criminal misdemeanor, and civil types such as CC, CT, and PL. Circuit Court receives probate, juvenile, mental-health, and the most serious felony filings under local assignment rules. Superior Court receives infractions, ordinances, small claims, and most other criminal matters.
CCS: the Chronological Case Summary, Indiana's formal name for the docket event list.
Style: the case caption naming the parties.
Event: a filing, hearing, notice, order, service, or disposition entered in time order.
A code identifies the filing category. It does not prove an allegation, result, or current obligation.
What a Case Search Returns
A Blackford County result row can display the case number, court, filing date, case status, type, and style. Opening it reveals the public case summary. Depending on the matter, that view may include parties, counsel, charges, bonds, citation numbers, cross-references, related cases, hearings, and a chronological Events array. Some events carry public document links. An event without a link still shows that an entry exists, but its underlying filing is not downloadable online.
| Case Number | Court, filing period, case type, and sequence, such as 05C01-YYMM-CC-000123. |
|---|---|
| Style / Parties | The caption and public party roles. |
| Case Type | The coded criminal, civil, family, probate, or citation category. |
| Filed Date | The date the case began, not a later hearing date. |
| Status | Open, closed, or another displayed state that must be read with later events. |
Blackford Documents Behind Events
MyCase is free and often links public filings, but it is not a complete document archive. Older records may not be online. A blank document area does not erase the event. The Blackford County Clerk keeps both Circuit and Superior Court files and can address a targeted request for a public order, judgment, or filing that the portal does not display.
The official MyCase search tips describe exact inputs, wildcard behavior, and case-number retries.

Those rules explain why a refined retry may succeed when a broad query fails.
For an official copy, identify the exact event and date. A browser printout is a public portal view, not a Clerk-certified record.
Statewide vs County Case Search
Blackford County does not operate a separate local docket database. MyCase is both the statewide search layer and the public online route for active Blackford Odyssey courts. The useful comparison is therefore between a statewide portal search and a precise county-limited query within that same system. The Clerk provides the local official-record fallback, not a second web index.
| Statewide MyCase Query | Blackford-Limited Query |
|---|---|
| All participating Odyssey courts. | 05C01 Circuit and 05D01 Superior results. |
| Useful when the filing county is uncertain. | Best for a known Blackford County matter. |
| More likely to produce broad name results. | Allows category, status, and filing-date refinement. |
When Blackford Search Fails
Retry an exact case number without hyphens or leading zeroes. Next try a citation or cross-reference, then a name query with Blackford County, a case category, and a date range. Use sounds-like only without a wildcard. A current hearing may sit in the Events area rather than the result row, so open the case summary before concluding that no date exists.
If those steps fail, call Circuit Court at 765-348-2901, Superior Court at 765-348-1840, or the Clerk at 765-348-1130. The courthouse counter is at 110 W. Washington Street in Hartford City during the Clerk's posted weekday hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A precise written request under Indiana Code 5-14-3 should identify the court, number, type, approximate filing date, and desired event or document.
The Odyssey court list confirms both active Blackford courts have used the platform since January 4, 2010.

Coverage confirms the online route while leaving older and restricted-file questions with the Clerk.
Access and Restricted Cases
Indiana court records are public unless a rule excludes them, but remote access can be narrower than courthouse access. Sealed cases, juvenile records, mental-health proceedings, protected personal data, treatment records, and some other sensitive material may display only a limited shell or nothing. Granted expungements may disappear from public results. Protection-order cases use the separate Indiana Protection Order Registry rather than ordinary MyCase searching.
A missing Blackford County result is not proof that no case exists. Parties and attorneys may obtain greater authenticated access to their own matters. Rule 9 supplies a verified written request and court-order process for some excluded records, including notice and possible hearing. It does not let Clerk staff bypass a seal.
Blackford Search Source Trail
A careful case search records the query date, portal address, court filter, and exact case number. That source trail matters because status and events can change. It also separates what MyCase displayed from what Clerk staff later confirmed.
The Odyssey case-management overview explains the system behind Indiana's Chronological Case Summary.

The CCS label helps readers distinguish the dated docket list from a linked document image.
Indiana also provides a formal bulk-data channel for compiled needs.

That separate process confirms that MyCase should be used for focused public case lookup, not automated harvesting.
Finally, the live MyCase portal is the official starting point.

Its court selector, case categories, and detail pages connect the search workflow described above.
